Gardendale City Schools Board of Education

About GBOE

The Gardendale City School System was established by an ordinance of the Gardendale City Council during a regular session on the 3rd day of March 2014. The City Council established the Gardendale Board of Education and appointed five members to five year rotating terms of office. The newly appointed Board of Education included Chris Segroves, Dick Lee, Chris Lucas, Karen White, and Dr. Michael Hogue.

The Gardendale Board of Education (GBOE) had its initial organizational meeting on Tuesday March 11, 2014 to get organized and discover the next steps in the creation of a new city school system. The GBOE was officially sworn in on April 1, 2014. The vision of the GBOE could best be seen in the words of Board member Dick Lee. He stated, “We ought to be bold in our vision and creative in our thinking. If we do that as a board, and if the community support is there, we can truly build a best-in-class system."

The GBOE proceeded in a search for a Superintendent by encouraging the community to provide input on what kind of Superintendent was needed through surveys and public forums during the month of April. After concluding the surveying of the community, the GBOE asked the Alabama Association of School Boards to advertise the position of Superintendent and provide them a list of candidates to interview on June 11-18, 2014.

The GBOE interviewed four candidates for the position of Superintendent and selected Dr. Patrick Martin at the June 24, 2014 Board Meeting. Dr. Martin began his service to the GBOE and the Gardendale community on August 4, 2014.

Dr. Martin and the GBOE have been working on developing an innovative and state of the art school system since his coming into his positon as Superintendent. These efforts have included the addition of a Central Office staff to assist in the creation of the new system. The new Central Office staff members include Randy Dunlap as Chief School Financial Officer, Bill Casaday Director of Secondary Education and Student Support Services, and Amee Donald Executive Administrative Assistant.
